Start Up Celebrates Local Businesses!
On July 15, 2006, Bell Street Park on University
Avenue in East Palo Alto was transformed into a
marketplace and community festival to celebrate the
achievements of local business owners. Start Up’s
Second Annual Celebration of Entrepreneurship featured
a festive array of yellow, blue, and red umbrellas
providing shade for 30 local businesses and nonprofit
agencies that provide essential resources for small
business owners. Children painted their faces, played
in a bounce house, and ate free popcorn while their
parents browsed the aisles of merchandise that
included everything from fashion jewelry and
accessories to Christian books to on-the-spot chair
massage.
Highlights of the event included two live performances
by Velocity Circus Troupe: a magic act and a Latin
juggler. Start Up presented awards to outstanding
local entrepreneurs, some of whom are just starting
out in business and others who have been in business
for decades. Award recipients included Feliciano
Zavala, Carolyn Khojasteh, Georgina Peraza, Anthony
Thomas, Celina Rodriquez, Manuel Chavez, Betty Burgess,
Stephen Stewart, Stephanie Griffin, and Keenan Wright.
In addition, the five winners of the Women and Company
Microenterprise Boost Program equity awards were
honored. Recipients of the $2,230 cash award were
Adrienne Bachleda, DaNesha Fuller, Yolanda Rhodes,
Aurea Rodriguez, and Valerie Wiley.
Attendees at the event included Assemblymember Ira
Ruskin, 21st District, California Legislature;
Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson, Fourth District, San
Mateo County Board of Supervisors; and Guillermo
“Memo” Morantes, San Mateo County Board of Education.
The Celebration was sponsored by Citibank (lead
sponsor), Wells Fargo, California Bank & Trust, and
the East Palo Alto – Belle Haven Chamber of Commerce.
